This paper describes a study of bone mineral content (BMC) by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) in 108 patients, from 27 to 84 years of age, who recieved gastrectomy. There was a total of 151 CT scannings. The study was designed to clarify the relationship of the extent of gastrectomy, operative procedure and postoperative duration to bone disorders by sex and age group. BMC was inversely proportional to postoperative duration in males in their 40's and 50's, in females in their 40's less than 2.5 years after the operation and in females in their 50's less than 4.2 years after the operation. The frequency of patients with low levels of BMC was higher in patients in their 40's and 50's than in the other age groups without distinction of sex. By the extent of gastrectomy, in males, there were more patients with low levels of BMC after partial gastrectomy than after total gastrectomy. On the other hand, in females, the reverse was found. There was no statistically significant difference between methods Billroth I and II. As velocity of the change in BMC was expressed as change rate compared with the preceding study of BMC (%)/duration (months), the fall in velocity of BMC became greater in females than in males, but the velocity over two years was decreased compared with it under two years after the operation.
