A rare case of benign submucosal tumor of the esophagus is reported. A 57-year-old man was admitted to our clinic complaining of a superficial protruding tumor of the upper thoracic esophagus. On the basis of the results of barium X-ray, endoscopy and CT-scanning, the lesion was diagnosed as a benign submucosal tumor. The tumor was extirpated through the cervical route without thoracotomy. Macroscopic examination of the resected specimen revealed an elastic hard tumor without a capsule, measuring 2.8×1.5×1.5 cm. Histopathological findings showed that the tumor was a very rare submucosal tumor of the esophagus arising from the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.
