A 51-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of epigastralgia and right back pain. The patient was diagnosed as having a double gallbladder with cholelithiasis by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and an operation was carried out. Double gallbladder is a rare anomaly. Only 48 cases including ours have been reported in Japanese literature. In earlier times, double gallbladder was first found during surgery in not a few cases. With advance in diagnostic techniques, however, preoperative diagnosis had recently been achieved in many cases. Although only the proximal gallbladder was associated with gallstones in our case, more than half of the patients are reported to have gallstones in both gallbladder. Therefore, both gallbladders should be removed at the operation.
