Reports of primary solid tumors of the mesentery are very rare in the literature and almost all reported malignant solid tumors of the mesentery are sarcomas and mesotheliomas. We experienced a case of papillary adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid mesocolon. A 42-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to this hospital because of a tender fist-sized tumor in the lower left quadrant of her abdomen. We performed a left hemicolectomy and a left salpingooophorectomy. Microscopically, the specimen was well-differentiated papillary adenocarcinoma mixed with undifferentiated carcinoma. By preoperative examinations and repeated intraoperative examination, except for this tumor in the mesocolon, we could not find any primary or metastatic foci of adenocarcinoma in her abdomen. The histological pattern of the adenocarcinoma is similar to that of germinal epithelial tumor of the ovary (serous papillary adenocarcinoma, partly with endometrioid adenocarcinoma). The patient is alive and doingwell 3 years after this major operation and no signs of recurrence can be detected.
