Study of Primary Multiple Cancers Associated with Gastric Cancers -Special Reference to the Lung Cancer and Esophageal Cancer-

Many investigators have reported a tendency toward increase in multiple primary cancers. We treated 366 patients with gastric cancers in our clinic from January 1980 through August 1991. Of these, 39 patients (10.6%) had primary malignant neopolasms in other organs (synchronous 22 cases, metachronous 17 cases) The primary malignant tumors associated with gastric cancers originated in the lung (12), esophagus (8), colo-rectum (4) and other organs. Gastrointestinal cancers are frequent in the synchronous cases. A familial history of cancer (44%), particularly early gastric cancer and well-differentiated carcinoma was noted clinicopathologically. The cumulative 5 year survival rate was 56% when both malignant tumors were resected curatively, while the result of noncurative resection or no resection was very poor. The prognosis for the patients with primary multiple cancers associated with gastric cancers depended on whether both malignant neoplasms were resected curatively or not. In order to have a good result, it is very important to pay special attention to finding a new cancer of other organs not only before but also after surgery.
