Endoscopic Sclerotherapy for Esophago-Gastric Varices
Hiroyasu Makuuchi
Department of Surgery, Tokai University School of Medicine
Endoscopic sclerotherapy has been developed to be the first choice of treatment for esophageal varices since introduced in Japan by Takase in 1978. The principles and techniques of endoscopic sclerotherapy for excellent results would be explained in detail. Furthermore, I would explain the treatment for so called "big tree varices" and fornix varices having high blood flow, in which pure ethanol or cyanoacrylate is very useful as sclerosants. Esophageal variceal ligation (EVL) or cyanoacrylate is suitable for the treatment of esophageal varices with poor liver function. I would also make interpretation about our treatment strategy of esophageal varices with hepatoma and the methods of sclerotherapy for gastric varices.
