The aim of this series was to study the clinical and pathological aspects of 48 smooth-muscle tumors to determine the prognostic value. The patients were divided into two groups: nonrecurrent group and recurrent group. The results, indicated statistically significant differences in tumor size, mitotic figures, MIB-1 cell count and MIB-1 index between the nonrecurrent group and the recurrent group. DNA aneuploidy was evident more often in the recurrent group (71. 4%) than in the nonrecurrent group (40. 9%). All four p53-positive patients were included in the recurrent group. In univariate analysis, MIB-1 cell count and MIB-1 index were identified as statistically significant factors. All patients with smooth-muscle tumors showing mitotic figures (>5), and/or MIB-1 cell count (>160) and p53 positive expression were included in the recurrent group. We attempted to determine the cut-off line between the groups, but some tumors were categorized as borderline tumors. Accordingly, these patients with borderline tumors require mandatory follow up for proper assessment of the precise prognostic factors.
