Benign tumors and early cancers of the proximal rectum are unreachable transanally and are treated by endoscopic surgery. We present our results with a modification of (TEM) that incorporates a standard laparoscope, video cameras, and standard laparoscopic instruments. Video-assisted TEM was conducted on 172 patients and endoscopic mucosal resection for 28 patients with rectal tumors. Proximal rectal tumors more than 15 mm in diameter are indicated for resection locally by video-assisted TEM.
