A 65-year-old man with lower bile duct cancer was treated by percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) for obstructive jaundice, but reduction was poor with a bile discharge of 120ml/day and a bilirubin reduction rate b of -0.0189 up to 4 weeks after PTBD. We diagnosed the patient as having prolonged obstructive jaundice. Own bile and Inchin-ko-to was orally administered, and jaundice improved dramatically. Bile discharge was 410ml/day and bilirubin reduction rate b -0.0504 at 7 weeks after PTBD. After undergoing radical pancreaticodoudenostomy, he was discharged after smooth postoperative course. Recent studies showed that Inchin-ko-to inhibits the apoptosis of hepatocytes resulted from bile congestion after obstructive jaundice, and lt induces rapid recovery of liver function. Inchin-ko-to is therefore useful in bile duct drainage.
