We report an extremely rare case of an esophageal schwannoma. A 64-year-old woman was admitted to hospital after a mediastinal tumor was found on a chest X-ray taken at another hospital. A chest CT, chest MRI and endoscopic ultrasonography showed a solid tumor in the esophagus, the patient was diagnosed as having an esophageal leiomyoma. Thoracoscopic enucleation was performed. The tumor was 3.5×3.0×2.0 cm in size and had a grayish white capsule. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of spindle cell bundles and showed a palisade arrangement of the nucleus. Immunohistochemical examinations were negative for α-smooth muscle actin and positive for S-100 protein. Thus, the tumor was diagnosed as an esophageal schwannoma.
