Although basaloid carcinoma of the esophagus generally has a poor prognosis, some cases have a long survival period. Sixty cases of the basaloid carcinoma of the esophagus, including cases treated at this hospital, were collected and the survival rates for the different tumor stages were calculated. The survival rates of the collected cases with early stage basaloid cancers (stage 0-IIB) were similar to those of patients with ordinary esophageal cancers. However, no long-term survivors were found among patients with advanced-stage cancers (stage III and IV). We encountered four cases of basaloid (-squamous) carcinoma of the esophagus. In Case 1, a basaloid carcinoma (pT3, ly-0, v-0, pN0, pStage II) was found in the lower thoracic esophagus of a 59-year-old male. Multiple liver metastases were detected 14 months after the initial operation. He died from a recurrence 703 days after the initial operation. In Case 2, a basaloid carcinoma (pT1b, ly-0, v-0, pN0, pStage I) was found in the lower thoracic esophagus of a 61-year-old male. He is alive 31 months after his initial operation. In Case 3, basaloid carcinoma (pT1a, ly-2, v-0, pN0, pStage 0) was found in the lower thoracic esophagus in association with an advanced cardia cancer (pT2 (ss), ly-2, v-2, pN1, pStage IIIA) in a 60-year-old male. Multiple liver metastases diagnosed histologically as basaloid carcinoma were detected 7 months after the initial operation. He died from a recurrence 435 days after operation. In Case 4, a basaloid carcinoma (pT3, ly-3, v-2, pN4, pStage IVa) was found in the abdominal esophagus of a 53-year-old male. He is alive 7 months after his initial operation.
