The efficacy of Mupirocin in methcillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection after esophageal operations was evaluated. Mupirocin ointment (30 mg per nostril) was applied to the vestibule three times a day for three days preopratively in all of the 56 cases of esophageal cancer before the operation, and was compared the MRSA infection rate with the historical control of 47 cases without Mupirocin use. MRSA infection was detected only in one case out of 54 (1.85%) in the Mupirocin group, though 9 cases of 47 (19.1%) in control group. The most frequent bacterium detected in both groups was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We conclude that Mupirocin is very useful in reducing the MRSA infection rate after excessively invasive esophageal cancer operations.
