Postoperative gastric function of the remnant stomach was evaluated by use of electrogastrography (EGG) and measurement of gastric emptying (GE) with acetaminophen for distal gastrectomy with stage I a gastric cancer among 15 cases of Billroth I (BI), 15 of pylorus preserving gastrectomy (PPG) and 15 of normal healthy control (HC), and was discussed among the significance of pyrolus preserving. Results: (1) EGG showed all negative activity at one month after operation, while it changed positive at 6 months in one case of BI and all of PPG group. (2) GE showed acute fallen type in BI, but it was almost normal pattern in PPG. (3) The gastric peristalsis was observed in PPG by X-ray examination of upper gastrointestinal tracts, while the volume of food remnants was slightly larger in PPG group than BI. From the above results, it is confirmed that PPG was recommentable method for the distal gastrectomy from the point of view on motility of the remnant stomach and gastric emptying, etc.
